When to Begin?

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

If you are serious about learning to speak English, at one point you might be realized that Start to speak in English is the only way to learn, but at that point you may also realize that your knowledge of English is not enough to start. To start, you need knowledge, but to acquire the knowledge you have to speak. If this sounds familiar to you, this advice may help you to put your feet on the ground. Linguist Steve Kaufmann writes in his blog about this. I found that is one of the good blogs for an English learner.

*First develop some knowledge by reading and listening in the language, and then start to practice it, there by you can avoid the embarrassments.
*Work on the phrases that you have trouble saying.
*He emphasizes the importance of listening.By saying “Listening is the dominant component”
*He also mentioned about some inner workings of Brain in the language learning process which I hope he will elaborate later on the blog.

Immigrant experience

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Migrating to another country is a courages decision that one has to make. It’s even harder for those who migrate to another country with different language than his/her own.

In the blog wetcoastwomen.com author recalls her immigrant root by saying…..
“The other arrives with great hope and expectations for a better life, or at least a different life. New challenges have to be met, involving jobs, housing, cultural differences, religious differences, language difficulties, maybe even racial differences. To be met with hope and excitement.” it continues here.

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.~Alan Cohen

We all know that children learn faster when it comes to learning a new language. Do we have to focus exclusively in English in order to learn?. It’s not only the Learners problem, but educators also concerned about teaching a Second language.
The article in lohud.com discusses about this issue from the perspective of teachers who teach second language.

Logic and common sense tell us that if we want to learn something, we have to face it by ourselves, although it may be painful at the beginning. It probably is, but it has to be learnt.
